Going on at The Woodlands. . .

Our second annual low country boil was held on November 18th. It was the first cold night of the season, and we enjoyed it by playing numerous rounds of doubles on all six courts. We also sat by the fire pit, enjoying jumbo roasted marshmallows and smores. The low country boil was the highlight of the night. Chef Jarell and Derreck made shrimp, potatoes, sausage, and corn that everyone enjoyed. We are already looking forward to next year's boil!

On October 21st we had our annual Halloween tennis social. This year we made it a pot-luck event, and participants brought dishes ranging from macaroni and cheese to pumpkin cake. It was a great event with lots of good food. Bob Marchi was our costume contest winner! Join us in November for our annual Low Country Boil tennis social!

The last weekend in August brought the 2011 Inter-club Tournament. Members of The Woodlands played teams from five other clubs in the area, including Cobblestone, Rockbridge, Forest Lake, Wildewood, and Longcreek. With  31 total points, The Woodlands came in fifth overall. Even though we did not take home the title, we had a great time playing in the event. We would also like to send a huge thank you to Kent Whitener, the tennis pro at Rockbridge, for hosting such a great tournament.

On Friday, June 24th we enjoyed our Wimbledon Tennis Social. Everyone dressed in all-while, and we played with wooden rackets. After the event, we headed to the clubhouse to watch the USC gamecocks play in the College World Series! It was a great night of sports!

Congratulations to our 3.5 Women's Senior team, The Alley Cats! They did not lose one match at the City Playoffs, and now they are headed to the State Championship in Hilton Head Island. Good Luck Alley Cats!

In between forehand and backhand strokes, we roasted marshmallows and filled our stomachs with shrimp, corn on the cob, sausage, and potatoes. Ray Cohen and Karen Goldenfield were the big winners of our raffle. Ray won a 3 liter bottle of wine, and Karen won a dinner for two at The Woodlands Grill. It was a perfect, Fall night for tennis.

The Round Robin Queens of the Court tennis Social was held on Saturday, November 6th, 2010. We had 15 ladies join the social. They enjoyed food, drinks, and three full hours of tennis. Congratulations to The 2010 Queens of the Court: Sukari Salone, Kathy Clymer, Jennie Flanders, and Fran Miolen.

Even though the rain came later in the evening, everyone had a great time!

Summer 2010 at The Woodlands

The summer of 2010 was filled tennis! We kicked off the summer with a Cinco de Mayo mixer. Over 40 people joined us for this exciting event. We enjoyed nachos, margaritas, beer, and lots of tennis.

We also started the summer by offering a new Cardio Tennis program to our club. Two local news stations, WLTX and WIS, came out to The Woodlands to report on the benefits of Cardio Tennis.  Our Cardio Tennis Progran runs weekly on Tuesday mornings at 9:00AM and Saturday mornings at 9:00AM.

In July we celebrated the grand opening of The Tennis Pro Shop. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres were served while members shopped and socialized. Joel Atkinson was the raffle-drawing winner, and he received a FREE racket re-stringing. Congratulations Joel! In the Tennis Pro Shop, we carry tennis apparel, tennis rackets, accessories, tennis balls, string, and shoes. If we do not have something, we can order it for you!

Junior Summer Tennis Camps ran throughout the summer. We offered Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced camps for children of all ages.

Mid-summer we welcomed Marshall Bogue as our new Assistant Tennis Professional! Marshall is doing a great job teaching lessons, growing our junior program, and maintaining the clay courts. For more information on Marshall's private lessons and clinics, please contact him at 803-312-5597.

We had two Junior Tennis League Teams out of The Woodlands over the summer of 2010. Robert Gettys was the head coach of the minor team and the major team. Each team did an exceptional job! Jon Guizor was the recipient of the major team's Hustler Awart. Grace Stricklin and Bruce Williams were the recipients of the minor team's Hustler Award. Hunter Horton was the recipient of the major team's Sportsmanship Award, and Ashlee Lasecki was the recipient of the minor team's Sportsmanship Award. The JTL Minor team came in 2nd place in their division, and the Major team came in 3rd place! Congratulations to all of the players!

This summer our clay courts received a new topdressing of clay and new lines! Thanks to Manchester Courts for their professional work.

The beginning of August brought the Inter-Club Tournament to The Plantation Club at Longcreek. The Woodlands put up a good match, and we had a number of teams in the finals of their divisions. Kevin Craig and Stephen Bidwell were finalists of the Men’s 4.0 division, Ed Benincasa and Tony Clauss were the Champions of the Men’s 3.0 division, and Ruth Rayman and Judy Rockwell were the finalists of the Women’s 3.5 division.
