The beautiful weather set the stage for the classic battle between Team Magnolia and Team Palmetto. Team Magnolia won the inaugural event in 2006 and then again in 2010, and Team Palmetto took home The Ruby Cup in 2007, 2008, and 2009. T.J. Zeveski captained Team Magnolia, and Robbie Prichard, who was looking for his first victory as a Ruby Cup Captain, was the fearless leader of Team Palmetto.
The festivities got underway with a Pairings Party on Friday night. The players enjoyed a few cocktails while the Team Captains unveiled the Saturday and Sunday pairings. The trash talking between the teams began as soon as the first match was made public.
On Saturday, the format was best-ball net of the twosome, playing a match play format where there were three total points available in the match – 1 point for winning the front nine, 1 point for winning the back 9, and 1 point for winning the overall match. Team Magnolia put points on the board early on Saturday, and stayed steady winning points in all but one match. After Saturday, Team Magnolia held a 6 Point lead – 22.5 to 16.5.Captain Prichard arrived at The Woodlands early on Sunday in an effort to rally his troops. A 6 point deficit was not much to overcome – 2 matches going 3-0 in Team Palmetto’s favor and the lead for Team Magnolia would be erased. As the Matches began reporting scores, it looked as if Team Palmetto might be making a bit of a comeback. After the first 8 matches reported their scores, Team Palmetto was only 3 points behind. After the 15th match (out of the 26 total) had reported, Team Palmetto was within one shot of Team Magnolia. Then, Jeff Capogrossi spanked John Jarema 2-1 in Match 18, and Team Palmetto actually took a 1 point lead.
Then it got really interesting. Mark Jordan edged out Freddy Powers in his match and won 2 points and evened the competition out. At this point, Team Magnolia had 51 Points and Team Palmetto had 51 Points. In Match 22, Lonnie Richard posted a 2.5 to 0.5 victory over Dave Hatfield and gave Team Palmetto a 1.5 point lead. Captain Prichard was puffing his chest out. A point and a half lead with 4 matches left had him feeling confident.
Cindy Keating of Team Palmetto, inflicted a beating on Debbie Richard and won two points for Captain Prichard – this gave Team Palmetto a 2.5 point lead. However, then the ladies for Team Magnolia took care of business. Patti Melotte halved her match with Betsy Duffy, and Natalie Huff won her match over Suzann Bartley 2.5 to 0.5. Then, in the decisive match – The Last Match – Match 26 – Julie Snider closed out Lauralee Hansen 3-0 and secured the victory for Captain Zeveski and Team Magnolia. The Team in Dark Blue won The Ruby Cup by 2 points – 59.5 to 57.5 – WHAT A GREAT FINISH !!!
